Four materials are listed for this airbox and it is tempting to lay them out as one ranked table. Two of the four will not go into it. Sprint Filter publishes a retention figure for the standard weave and for this racing weave — 93.13 % and 95.22 % of 100-micron particles respectively — and publishes nothing comparable for the two fine nonwovens. So the racing weave's headline advantage lives entirely inside the measured half of the range and says nothing whatever about the half that was never measured against it.
Key Features
- Dry polyester racing weave, 85 microns, with flow quoted at 15,000 l/m²/sec
- Measured at 95.22 % retention of 100-micron particles, against 93.13 % for the P08
- About three times the standard weave's rate, from the same frame and fold
- Never oiled, so nothing can be carried downstream onto the intake sensors
- Direct replacement in the series airbox, without modification or remapping
- Washed with compressed air and reused; two years of warranty from purchase
What was measured, and against what
The comparison behind those two percentages was run at one particle size, which is why the coarser weave can post the higher figure: 85 microns describes the cloth, 95.22 % describes how a specific test load behaved on it, and the two are not the same statement. For the 14-micron and 7-micron nonwovens there is no equivalent number at all, so a buyer comparing all four is holding two measured results and two ratings, which cannot be lined up in a single column.
What that leaves you buying
Flow, principally, and the confidence of a weave measured at the coarse end. Whether a road-registered 1290 ever calls on three times the standard rate is a separate question and the honest answer is usually no, because a filter is only ever the ceiling when nothing downstream is lower. Nor does any of this reach the outcome people hope for: a drop-in element does not make a standard motorcycle noticeably quicker. What it does is start low on restriction and return there each time it is cleaned rather than drifting upward unannounced.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air at the clean face, worked outward, is the whole of a routine service on the PM190S F1-85; the load leaves through the surface that stopped it. Where the weave has picked up something oily off the road, lukewarm water with a mild detergent and a thorough rinse will clear it, after which it needs moving air and time rather than help. No heat gun, no radiator and no flame — heat is what actually destroys these — and it goes back in dry, with nothing applied to it. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
For the KTM 1290 Super Duke R of 2020 to 2023, in the unmodified original airbox. Three machines share this code — the 1290 Super Duke R, the 1290 Super Duke RR and the 1390 Super Duke R — each listed with its own years in the Fitment tab. Two different capacities carry the Super Duke R name here, so order by element code and model year.
