Two kinds of statement sit on this page. One kind you can test yourself within an hour of opening the box: that the element seats on the standard mounting, that nothing has to be cut or repositioned, that it is dry to the touch and stays dry, that an air line brings it back, that the original panel can go straight back in if you change your mind. The other kind — 85 microns, 15,000 litres per square metre per second, 95.22 per cent of 100-micron particles — comes from the manufacturer and stays there. It is worth knowing which half you are actually buying on.

The half you can check

Fit, dryness, reversibility and the cleaning routine are all verifiable by the owner, and between them they cover most of what makes this part worth having. A dry element has no dose to get wrong. A washable one turns an inspection into a free act. A reversible one means a decision taken now is not a decision taken for good. None of that rests on a figure anyone has to believe.

The half you cannot, and what follows from it

The bench figures cannot be reproduced in a garage, so the sensible use of them is comparative rather than absolute. Against the standard weave at 80 microns and 5,050 litres per square metre per second, this cloth is coarser and passes about three times as much for a given area; against the fine nonwoven at 14 microns and 1,800 it is coarser again. That ordering is what the numbers are for. What they never support is an output claim: a replacement element makes no standard machine quicker, and a 401 homologated within the A2 category is capped well upstream of the airbox. The reliable benefit is a low starting restriction that a wash brings back.

Care and cleaning

The routine is short. Compressed air, applied at the clean face of the PM293S F1-85 and driven outward, clears the ordinary load of a road season. Where more is needed use lukewarm water and a small amount of mild detergent, rinsing until the run-off is clear. Then let it dry in circulating air, keeping it away from radiators, hot-air guns and any flame, and refit it only when it is dry all the way through.
