A ZX6R Ninja takes its air from the front of the fairing. Ducting runs from the nose to a sealed airbox, so above a certain road speed the box is not standing in still air but being fed by it. That is why the housing is closed rather than open, and why the flat panel inside it is the only part of the intake a rider is meant to touch. Everything else in there is doing a job that does not want improving. The panel is the part that fills up.
Key Features
- One layer of woven polyester, run dry from the first kilometre and never oiled
- 80 µm of filtration at a flow of 5,050 l/m²/sec — Sprint Filter's road and track medium
- Thread from ø 22 microns upward: the opening is set by the weave, not by pressed pulp
- Roughly twice the filtering surface of other performance elements
- Takes the paper panel's place in the standard airbox — nothing cut, nothing remapped
- Cleaned with compressed air and used again; two years of warranty from purchase
Why the airbox stays closed
The upgrade usually offered to a faired sports bike is to take the box away and fit open cones. On a machine ducted from the nose, that trades away what the intake was built around: a sealed volume held slightly above ambient pressure, on an inlet path whose length the calibration already assumes. It also hands the intake over to engine bay heat and road spray. This element does the opposite — it changes the cloth and leaves the geometry where Kawasaki put it. Which is the point at which to say plainly that this is not a power part: a drop-in filter does not make a standard ZX6R Ninja noticeably stronger.
What changes between services
A paper panel is at its most open on the day it goes in and tightens from then on. On a ducted intake that drift works against the pressure the ducts are supplying, and it does so quietly — nothing on the dash, nothing the throttle hand could name. An element that is cleaned instead of thrown away comes back close to where it started every time, on the afternoon you choose rather than the week a part arrives. For a supersport that sees a season of road riding and a handful of track days in the same year, that is the difference: not a bigger number, the same number for longer.
Care and cleaning
Most services need nothing but compressed air, held against the clean face of the PM92S so the dirt leaves the way it came in. After a salted winter, wash it in lukewarm water with a little mild washing-up liquid and rinse until the water runs clear. Let it dry through in moving air at its own pace — never with a heat gun, on a radiator or over a flame, because heat ruins polyester — then refit it dry. No oil at any stage. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Cut for the airbox of the Kawasaki ZX6R Ninja, 2009 to 2026. The same element covers two machines, the other being the ZX6R Ninja ABS built from 2013; both are named in the Fitment tab. Sprint Filter also lists this airbox with the racing P08 F1-85 cloth, which is a different trade rather than a higher grade.
