An airbox is not only a container. Its volume, its inlet and the route the air takes to reach it were all part of the machine that was submitted for type approval, alongside the exhaust and the fuelling, and the noise a motorcycle makes at the roadside is measured with that box in place. This is worth saying because the traditional intake modifications on a superbike of this era — pulling the snorkel, drilling the lid, removing the box altogether — all change exactly those things. PM58S changes none of them. It is a cloth that occupies the space the original panel occupied, inside a housing that stays as Honda built it.
Key Features
- Woven polyester, single layer, dry from first fitting to last — no oil at any stage
- 80 µm filtration at a rated 5,050 l/m²/sec, specified for road and circuit use
- Fibre diameter from ø 22 microns, which is the thread and not the gap between threads
- Roughly double the cloth area of a conventional performance element
- Original airbox, original mounting, nothing cut and no remapping required
- Cleaned with compressed air and reused; two years of guarantee from purchase
The change that leaves the housing alone
The distinction is not cosmetic. Removing or perforating an airbox alters the volume the engine draws from, where it takes its air and the acoustics of the whole intake; the calibration was made around all three. Swapping the medium inside the box leaves the geometry untouched and is undone in minutes, which is why it is the one intake change that can be made without a conversation about what else has to be adjusted afterwards. It is also the reason no remap is needed: nothing the fuelling was mapped against has moved.
What that leaves the P08 to do
Not much, if the claim is power: a standard litre engine does not gain it from an element. What the cloth does is hold the intake restriction steady over years instead of letting it creep between services. Cellulose is at its best the day it is fitted and declines until it is thrown out; a washed weave goes back to its own starting point, and it is built to last the life of the motorcycle rather than an interval. On the retention side the manufacturer measures its weave at 93.13 % of 100-micron particles, against 76.42 % for four-layer oiled cotton — and it does it with no oil that could reach an intake sensor.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air on the clean face, blowing outward, is the whole routine for most services. When more is needed, wash PM58S in warm water with a mild dish soap and rinse until clear. Heat is the one prohibition that matters — no hairdryer, no exhaust, no flame — and the element goes back in dry, with nothing applied to it. Sprint Filter’s maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
PM58S is listed for the Honda CBR1000RR built from 2008 to 2016 — one machine on this reference. The later CBR1000RR is a separate entry with its own year window and part number, so read the build year in the registration document and check it against the compatibility list before ordering.
