DescriptionThe whole story▼
Disused quarries are among the few places where an enduro rider can use all of a big four-stroke. Long gravel straights end in tight turns, the surface changes from packed stone to loose grit within a few bike lengths, and the front brake decides whether you make the corner. The SWM RS 500 R is at home in that kind of open, fast terrain. Accossato's B8281 replaces its front brake lever on the bikes from 2016 to 2019. It is machined from Ergal 7075 in Italy, and a hinge between base and blade allows the blade to fold in a crash.
Key Features
- Folding front brake lever for the SWM RS 500 R, 2016 to 2019
- Fits the original front brake master cylinder
- Shorter blade, designed for three fingers
- Anti-break hinge between dark base and coloured blade
- Milled from a solid block of Ergal 7075 in Italy
- Black, blue or orange blade
- No German ABE documented; for off-road and competition use
Construction and Material Quality
Accossato starts the B8281 as a solid block and mills it on CNC machines in Italy. The block is Ergal 7075, an alloy chosen because it is considerably stronger than common aluminium grades, and the goal, as the company puts it, is a lever that combines strength and reliability with low weight. There are two elements: a dark base that stays mounted on the master cylinder, and a blade that hangs from a hinge and can fold away from it. Black, blue and orange are the blade colours on offer. Brake levers in Accossato's off-road range are shorter than the clutch levers and shaped for three fingers.
Hard Braking on Loose Stone
Braking from speed on loose stone is a balancing act. The front tyre has to do most of the stopping, but it only grips as long as it keeps rolling, so the lever is squeezed progressively, never snatched, and eased the moment the front starts to push. On a 500 four-stroke the engine braking helps, and a touch of rear brake settles the bike. Accossato shapes the blade for three fingers, which leaves thumb and little finger around the grip when the ruts start throwing the bars about.
Sometimes the front goes anyway. A patch of grit on top of hard rock or a hidden rut, and the RS 500 R slides out and skates along on its side, with the lever pressed into the gravel beneath it. The hinge on the B8281 allows the blade to fold forward instead of taking all of that force at the tip, so there is a reasonable chance it is still intact when the bike comes to rest. It is no armour, and a violent slide can damage any lever, but it may mean the difference between another lap and a long push back to the van.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato lists the B8281 for the SWM RS 500 R from 2016 to 2019 and mounts it on the original front brake master cylinder. The C7182 folding clutch lever is its partner for the same model years, in the same choice of black, blue or orange. RS 500 R model years outside that span are not covered by this listing.
Road Approval
There is no German ABE for the B8281. The RS 500 R can be registered for the road, but this lever is intended for off-road terrain and competition; on public roads it is not approved.
