A micron figure is a property of a material, and an engine is not protected by a material. It is protected by a material sealed into position, because air takes any route left open to it, and the route around a panel's edge filters nothing. That is the unglamorous half of any filter specification, and it is why a dust element is only worth having if it is the right shape: the PM142P14 keeps the outline and sealing face of the panel BMW's airbox lid was built to clamp.
Key Features
- A dry non-woven polyester mat closing to 14 microns, for dust and long distances
- Rated at 1,800 l/m²/sec against the 5,050 of the standard element for the same box
- Free of oil throughout its service life, new and after every wash
- Close to double the filtering surface of a typical performance panel
- Seats exactly where the factory panel sat, with no modification and no remap
- Serviced with an air line rather than replaced, covered two years from purchase
The half of filtration that never gets quoted
Published figures describe cloth in a laboratory: so many microns, so many litres through a square metre in a second. Fitted to a motorcycle, a medium is only as good as the joint around it, and a small leak is worse than it sounds: unfiltered air is not filtered slightly less well, it is not filtered at all. None of that argues for a fine medium in particular. It argues for one that goes in without persuasion, and this one does: it takes the standard panel's place, the lid closes as it always did, and no spacer or trimming enters the story.
Then what the fine mat is for
Fourteen microns against the standard weave's eighty, at a rated 1,800 l/m²/sec against 5,050 — less air through an equal area of material, in return for holding back more of what the air is carrying. The trade runs in both directions and cannot be escaped, which is why the two media are placed rather than ranked. On a roadster that spends dry summers behind harvest traffic and along unsealed edges, the finer end is defensible; on one living on wet city tarmac it is retention bought and not used. Neither element is a power part: dropping a filter into an unmodified airbox does not make a standard R 1250 R noticeably stronger.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air, applied to the clean side and worked outwards, is the whole of ordinary maintenance; a mat attacked from the dirty face swallows what you meant to shift. Where air is no longer enough, wash it in tepid water with a little mild detergent and rinse until the water leaves clean. Then the slow part: it dries in open air and nothing else, since heat guns, radiators and flames all destroy polyester, and it must be dry through before it goes back — a mat still damp loads far faster than a dry one. Refit it unoiled; the maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
