Much of what gets claimed for an air filter belongs to some other component. Cooler intake air, a broader spread of torque, a different pickup off a closed throttle — an element sits inside a sealed plastic box and does exactly one thing to the air crossing it, which is resist it. The temperature that air arrives at is settled by where the box takes it from and by every surface the charge touches on the way to the valves, and none of that alters when the panel inside is exchanged. Restriction is what alters. So it is worth being exact about how much, and about how long it stays that way.
Key Features
- Dry woven polyester rated at 80 microns, flow measured at 5,050 l/m²/sec
- Threads from 22 microns across — a specification of the fabric, not a hole size
- Never oiled, so no film exists that could travel downstream onto sensors
- Roughly double the working surface of a usual performance element
- Goes into the unmodified series airbox where the factory panel sat
- Cleaned and refitted rather than binned; two years of warranty from purchase
The one variable an element owns
Restriction is the whole of its remit. A filter cannot cool a charge, cannot lengthen a runner, cannot change valve timing or the volume of the box around it; those were settled in Mattighofen and they stay settled. Which is why the honest claim is the modest one: no drop-in element makes a standard motorcycle noticeably quicker, and a promise to the contrary describes an expectation rather than a measurement.
Restriction that returns instead of drifting
The property worth buying is not the figure on the first morning but its behaviour across the following four winters. A cellulose panel starts somewhere and moves in one direction only, and because the fuelling quietly compensates there is no moment at which the rider is told. This weave is dry, so its load is held mechanically and can be driven back out the way it came, and it is washable, so the low starting restriction is a state the element returns to rather than one it leaves behind for good.
Care and cleaning
Servicing the PM190S means compressed air at the clean face, worked outward, so the load departs through the surface that arrested it. That covers very nearly every interval. When the weave has picked up something greasier than dust, lukewarm water with a mild detergent and a rinse until the run-off is clear will deal with it, after which it wants moving air and patience. No hot-air gun, no radiator and no flame at any stage — heat is what really finishes one of these — and it is refitted dry with nothing sprayed on. The maintenance sheet sits in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
