DescriptionThe whole story

Most Spark systems for the Yamaha R9 are competition parts. This one is not: GYA8886TOM keeps the catalytic converter, comes with an EC homologation certificate, and still puts the Grid-O silencer — the muffler that won the 2020 Moto2 world title — on the side of the bike. It weighs 5.2 kg against 7.0 kg standard, so you give up some of the weight saving a race system offers and get a road-usable exhaust in return.

Key Features

  • Road-legal construction with an EC homologation certificate supplied by Spark.
  • AISI 304 stainless steel manifold with a 3-into-1 pipe and integrated catalytic converter.
  • Silenced pre-chamber box feeding a single Grid-O titanium silencer in the low mounting position.
  • 5.2 kg against 7.0 kg for the standard system — 1.8 kg saved without losing the catalyst.
  • Grid-O silencer with visible TIG welding, the same design used to win the 2020 Moto2 World Championship.
  • Not compatible with a centre stand.
  • Made by Spark in Mantova, Italy.

Build Quality & Materials

The manifold is AISI 304 stainless steel rather than titanium, and that is a deliberate choice for a road system: stainless takes winter salt, gravel and the constant heat cycling of everyday riding without the surface degradation that thin titanium eventually shows. The 3-into-1 collector runs into a catalytic converter and then a silenced box, which is where the noise reduction actually happens — the visible silencer is doing less work than it looks like it is.

The Grid-O silencer itself is full titanium with the weld seams left visible. Spark does that on purpose: on a hand-TIG-welded case the seam is the quality statement, and hiding it under polish would be hiding the part of the job that took the skill. It is the same silencer Spark supplies to Moto2 and Superbike grids.

Performance & Sound

Spark describes this system as the successor to its Euro 4 version for the same platform: stainless manifold, 3-into-1 with catalytic converter, silenced box and a single low-mounted silencer, deliberately aggressive in character. Because the catalyst and the box both stay, the sound is a road sound — deeper and harder than standard, but nothing that will end a track day early or attract attention on a Sunday morning.

Spark publishes no separate decibel figure for this configuration. What it does state is the weight and the homologation, and both are quoted here.

Fitment & Compatibility

Spark builds this one part number for three machines on the same platform: the MT-09 from 2021 to 2026, the XSR 900 from 2022 to 2025 and the YZF R9 from 2025 to 2026. One system, one mounting, three model names on the tank. The one hard restriction is the centre stand: with this exhaust fitted, it cannot be used. If you rely on a centre stand for chain maintenance or touring, the Triade version with three outlets is worth looking at instead.

Road Approval

This is a homologated part: Spark issues an EC certificate with it, and the catalytic converter stays in the system. The entry carries an asterisk in Spark's price list, and that asterisk matters — it signals that the certificate is written for a defined span of model years and emission classes, not for every R9 ever built. Send us your registration document and we will confirm the certificate covers your machine before the parcel leaves.
