DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 15021-20 is a shock absorber spring rated at 200 N/mm, 45 mm long with a 61 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.
Key Features
- Free length 45 mm
- Öhlins part number 15021-20
- 15 mm of usable stroke
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- Inner diameter 61 mm
- Powder-coated black
- Measured spring rate 200 N/mm
How Öhlins Makes Them
Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes. Production is Öhlins' own in Sweden, and the tolerance on the rate is what separates these from a generic replacement.
The Numbers That Matter
Free length 45 mm, inner diameter 61 mm, rate 200 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.
Where This Rate Belongs
Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.
Rate and the Linkage
Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong.
Applications
Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight.
Fitting
Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in. Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque.
Road Approval
Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.
Fitting and Setup Service
We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
