Three machines share this airbox, and only one of them is offered the 7-micron mat: the GS. The two road versions get the 14-micron step instead, which the GS is not listed for at all. Why the GS is the one that gets it

Of the three motorcycles built around this housing, the GS is the one specified with unsealed roads in view — the wire wheels, the ground clearance, the riding position. Sprint Filter's list follows that logic: the extreme medium exists for the adventure version and not for the roadsters. It is a rare case of a catalogue giving a clear signal about intended use, and it is worth reading as exactly that. It says nothing about the two other machines being lesser; it says this is the one expected to meet loaded air.

No middle step to hide in

Without the 14-micron step, nobody can split the difference here. One panel or the other carries the whole year, and the distance between them is ninefold on the flow bench — a distance that does not switch itself off during the months of tarmac in between. So the question is about the calendar, not the data sheet: how many weeks does this GS actually spend on dry, unsealed ground? Where the answer runs into weeks, the PM189T12 earns its keep. Where it is a weekend or two, the standard panel is the better-matched part. Neither of them makes the engine stronger; an element in an untouched airbox leaves a series G 310 GS as it found it.

Care and cleaning

Start the PM189T12 with air: the compressor line on the clean face, swept outwards, low pressure, and more time than a woven panel would need — deep-loaded material lets go gradually. Water follows only where air has failed, lukewarm and with a mild detergent, and the rinsing continues until nothing clouds it. Then the panel waits in moving air at room temperature until it is dry through; every heat source is excluded, because they wreck the mat without leaving a trace. It returns to the airbox untreated.
