Four Sprint Filter media are catalogued for this airbox, and they do not all cover the same machines. The P14, cut for dusty work, is listed for the M 1000 RR, the S 1000 R and the S 1000 RR, but for neither XR. The T12, the extreme-conditions cloth, is listed for the two XR models only. That split says more than a ranking would: somebody decided which of these machines meets which kind of air. PM171S is the standard P08 panel, specified for all five.
Key Features
- Woven polyester in one layer, run dry: no oil when it arrives, none after a wash
- 80 µm of filtration, 5,050 l/m²/sec of rated flow: the P08 is the road and track medium
- Fibre diameter starts at ø 22 microns, which is the thread and not the gap it forms
- Filtering cloth of roughly twice the area, folded into the unchanged frame
- Straight swap for the paper panel: the airbox stays sealed as built, the mapping as written
- Washed and used again for as long as the motorcycle lasts, guaranteed two years
Reading the trade rather than the ladder
Finer cloth holds back more and passes less; the figures say so plainly. This P08 is quoted at 80 µm and 5,050 l/m²/sec. The T12 that also fits this XR is quoted at 7 µm and 560 l/m²/sec: roughly a ninth of the flow through a far smaller opening. Neither figure makes one better than the other; they describe two jobs. The catalogue prices them that way too: the T12 is listed a little below four fifths of what this panel costs, so the finer medium is not the dearer one. The racing weave for the same housing, the P08 F1-85, goes the other way at 85 µm and 15,000 l/m²/sec, at close to two and a half times this price.
Why the standard cloth is the standard answer
The M 1000 XR is a road machine with fairing, screen and luggage mounts, ridden on surfaced roads at high average speed. Its air is ordinary air, and the medium written for ordinary air is this one. What it will not do is add performance: an element inside an unmodified box does not make a series motorcycle noticeably quicker, whatever the specification sheet says. The gain is duller — intake resistance stops climbing quietly between services, because the panel is brought back with an air line instead of being thrown away and bought again.
Care and cleaning
The routine is dry: an air line held to the clean side of the PM171S, blown outwards, so the load leaves by the route it took in. Anything greasier — a wet autumn, road film after a tour — comes off with lukewarm water and a mild detergent, rinsed until clear. Drying happens in open air alone, never with a heat gun and never with a flame, and the element goes back untreated and dry. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the BMW M 1000 XR from 2021 to 2026, fitting the standard airbox unmodified. The XR has carried one part number since it appeared, which is not true of every name on this list: the S 1000 RR, the S 1000 XR and the M 1000 RR each have model years on a different element. Five machines are covered here; the years for each are in the Fitment tab.
