When one figure on a specification sheet moves and the rest hold still, the useful thing is to say out loud which is which. What doubles

Two things, and they are the same thing counted twice. The material the air has to cross, and therefore the quantity of dust the element can take on board before its resistance begins to rise. On a machine like this one — used for distance, often loaded, often in traffic behind something throwing grit — that translates into a longer stretch between services rather than into anything a rider would describe as a difference. It is capacity, and capacity shows itself only as the absence of the moment when the old element would have needed dealing with.

What does not

Everything else. The rating stays at fourteen microns, so the element catches exactly what it caught before and misses exactly what it missed. The rated flow per square metre is unchanged because it describes the mat. The fit is identical, the absence of oil is identical, the cleaning routine is identical and the two years of warranty are identical. And nothing here touches output: an air filter inside an unmodified airbox does not make a standard R 1250 RT noticeably stronger, at either surface area. A larger filter is a longer interval and nothing else, which is a small claim, and true.

Care and cleaning

Compressed air from the clean side, worked outwards, is the whole of the ordinary service; the load then leaves the mat by the route it entered rather than being driven through it. If a heavy season has gone in deeper than air will retrieve, hand-warm water with a trace of mild detergent takes over, and the rinsing continues until the water comes off clear. The drying is where patience is compulsory: moving air alone, for as long as it takes, with nothing warm and nothing burning near the element. The K142P14 is refitted dry and unoiled.
