A Middleweight With the Same Idea
Ducati scaled the liquid-cooled Monster down to 821 cc and 112 horsepower. It weighed less, cost less and was the version most people actually bought.
No Maker's Mark
The face is left plain. It is the version for an owner who wants a machined component that reads as factory rather than as an accessory.
An Urban Mode That Means It
Seventy-five horsepower and softened throttle response, which on a bike used in traffic every day is a genuinely useful setting rather than a marketing feature.
Housing Without Switch
The switch block is unaffected. This replaces the throttle assembly, which is the appropriate purchase when the switchgear is sound.
Where the Tube Runs
A machined bore keeps the rotation smooth for years. On a motorcycle used daily rather than occasionally, that is noticed long before anything else about the component.
Black Anodised
Converted into the aluminium. An 821 is frequently ridden through winters, and an anodised surface survives salt where a coating begins to lift.
Ergal 7075
Aerospace grade at roughly twice the yield strength of ordinary machined alloy. On a naked bike parked in cities, the low-speed drop is a question of when.
The Volume Monster
The 821 outsold the 1200 comfortably because it was enough motorcycle for most people. That has always been the pattern with this model and Ducati has always known it.
Steel, Not Aluminium
The trellis survived on the 821 long after the superbikes had abandoned frames entirely. It is heavier and it is also what a Monster is supposed to look like.
Where the Weight Went
Liquid cooling and a bigger radiator added mass the air-cooled Monsters never carried, and Ducati clawed it back with a lighter subframe and a redesigned tank. The result weighed almost exactly what its predecessor did while making thirty more horsepower, which is a considerably harder achievement than the specification sheet makes it look.
