The Switch That Works Hardest
Indicators at every junction, on a motorcycle ridden in traffic rather than at circuits. That single contact sees more cycles in a year than the horn does in the life of the bike.
Printed Markings Fade
The legends on a moulded block are surface printing. They give up after four or five summers, which leaves a rider operating controls entirely from memory and position.
Warm and Cold, Repeatedly
The bar area on a big L-twin cycles through a considerable temperature range every ride. Moulded plastic takes a permanent set under that; machined aluminium is unaffected.
Clips Lose Their Grip
Two moulded halves held together with snap fittings, under the vibration of a 1198 cc twin, for a decade. The looseness that results is small, permanent and impossible to ignore afterwards.
A Layer Measured in Microns
Anodising penetrates the aluminium rather than covering it. A scratch reveals more coloured surface instead of bright metal, which is why these components age quietly.
Reversible Before a Sale
Nothing spliced anywhere in the harness. The original block returns in twenty minutes and there is no evidence that it ever came off.
Thirty-Five More Horsepower
Going from the air-cooled 1100 to the liquid-cooled 1198 was the largest jump the Monster ever made. Ducati kept the silhouette and changed almost everything underneath it.
An Adjustable Tail
Seat height and subframe configuration could both be changed, which is a rare piece of accommodation from this company and part of why the 1200 suited so many different riders.
A Colour Display in 2014
Full TFT with modes and traction levels readable at a glance, when much of the class still used segment LCDs. Everything on it was navigated from the left-hand bar.
