The Saturation Problem
A charcoal canister that has been overfilled can pass liquid fuel to the purge valve, and the result is a rich, uneven idle that comes and goes without pattern. On a V-Strom with a large tank being brimmed at every opportunity — which is what riders on long stages do — this is a realistic failure rather than a theoretical one, and it is very difficult to diagnose at the roadside.
A Bike That Gets Loaded
The DL1050 carries luggage, and luggage brings wiring: a heated jacket controller, an auxiliary fuse block, a compressor, a satnav feed. Every one of those needs a dry, sheltered home, and there are not many left once the panniers are mounted. The canister occupies one of the better ones.
The Legal Point on a Touring Bike
This matters more here than on a track machine. A V-Strom is bought to cross countries on public roads, and the evaporative system is part of what makes that lawful. Riding across borders with emissions equipment removed is a decision to take deliberately rather than discover at a roadside check.
