The Air-Cooled Original
Triumph built the modern Bonneville with a carburettor and then a fuel-injected 865 cc twin, all of it air-cooled and none of it hiding what it was.
Sixty-Eight Horsepower
Modest by any measure and entirely beside the point. The Bonneville sells on shape, sound and a name that means something to people who have never owned one.
Charcoal in a Plastic Vessel
It absorbs petrol vapour rising from a warm tank and holds it until the engine can draw it through the intake. That is the whole mechanism.
Ethanol and Charcoal
Modern fuel blends age the bed faster than the petrol the system was designed around, which is one reason older canisters are so frequently saturated.
Why It Exists at All
Regulations require that fuel vapour be captured rather than released, and charcoal is the cheapest way to do it. Nothing about the arrangement benefits the rider.
The Full Removal, Step by Step
Seat off, tank lifted, hoses freed at both ends, bracket unbolted, vessel out, vent fitting installed, purge circuit answered, everything back together. It is longer to list than to do and the only awkward part is access.
Vapour Volume Scales With the Tank
A twenty litre tank in the sun produces considerably more than a fifteen litre one, and the canister is the same size on both. The touring models therefore reach saturation sooner and suffer the symptoms more often.
A System Most Owners Never Think About
Evaporative control runs entirely without rider involvement, produces no indication that it exists and is never mentioned in a handover. The first anybody hears of it is usually a starting problem that takes weeks to trace to a component they did not know was fitted.
Where the Hoses Go
One to the tank, one to the purge valve and one venting to atmosphere. Following them before anything is disturbed is the single most useful five minutes of the job.
