A long route is planned against its hardest section rather than its average one: tyres, luggage and fuel range all get chosen for the worst two hundred kilometres on the map. An air filter can be specified the same way, and on a TRK 702 the T12 is what that looks like — 7 microns of retention held ready for the gravel stretch, the harvest month, the days spent behind other vehicles on unsurfaced roads. The question to settle before ordering is whether that section genuinely exists on your map. Where it does, the mat earns the airflow it gives up. Averages hide the hours that count

Dust does not arrive evenly. A summer of clean motorway can be undone in one afternoon on a dry unsealed road with traffic ahead, and that afternoon is what a finer mat is bought for. Which is why an average is a poor way to choose a medium and a peak is a good one: particles that get past a filter are not handed back at the end of the season. The reverse deserves the same honesty. If the peak never happens, nothing has been gained, because this element cannot make a standard TRK 702 noticeably stronger and was never meant to.

What the peak costs on ordinary roads

Roughly a ninth of the rated airflow per square metre of material, on every day the mat is fitted. Retention and throughput are ends of one lever and neither medium outranks the other in the abstract; the 7-micron mat simply sits at the protective end of it. Riders who plan a tour into dusty country and want the road weave for the rest of the year keep both panels: both are washable, both are dry, and neither is used up by being taken out of the bike.

Care and cleaning

Air first, from the clean side, worked patiently across the surface, since a fine nonwoven gives its load back slowly and does not respond to being blasted. If a film remains, lukewarm water with a hint of mild detergent and a thorough rinse will finish the job. Everything then dries in ambient air — no radiator, no hot-air gun, no flame — before the SM258T12 goes back into the box dry and untreated.
