A filter works in one direction only, and it only works forwards. Whatever has already gone through the intake of a Rocket III that is now anything from eight to twenty-two years old has gone through it; no element bought today reaches back and undoes a single kilometre of it. That sounds like an argument against bothering. It is the opposite: it means the only part of this motorcycle's life a filtration decision can still affect is the part that has not happened yet, and on a well-kept Rocket III that is usually the larger part.
Key Features
- Dry special non-woven medium rated at 14 microns, used entirely without oil
- Rated flow of 1,800 l/m²/sec, against 5,050 l/m²/sec for the standard P08
- Finer means more retained and less passed — a trade between two properties, not a ranking
- Around twice the media area of a conventional sports element
- Fits the standard airbox in the original position: no cutting, no brackets, no fuelling change
- Cleaned with compressed air and refitted; two years' warranty from the date of purchase
The history you bought and the history you write
Most of these machines are on at least their second owner, and the service record almost never covers the intake in any detail — a paper element leaves no trace of how long it was left in or what it saw. So the honest position for a buyer is that the first part of the odometer is unknown and unrecoverable. What is recoverable is everything after the day the CM232P14 goes in: a documented specification, a cleaning routine with a date attached, and a filtration standard that does not quietly decay between services because the medium is restored rather than replaced.
Choosing the finer medium on purpose
Fourteen microns is a decision to hold back more of the fine, abrasive fraction, and it is paid for in flow: 1,800 l/m²/sec against 5,050. On a large, low-revving triple that is a more affordable payment than on a sports engine, but it should still be made deliberately, for air that is genuinely dusty. It buys no power — nothing fitted to a standard airbox does — and it will not be felt from the saddle. It is a specification chosen for the inlet side of the valves, where nobody is watching and the effects are cumulative.
Care and cleaning
Out with the element, compressed air over the inner, clean face, worked steadily so the dust leaves the way it came in. Lukewarm water with a little mild detergent for whatever stays, rinsed until the water runs clear. Dry it in open air well away from heaters, hot air guns and any flame, and refit it only when it is completely dry and untreated. It is never oiled at any point. The cleaning sheet for the CM232P14 is in the Downloads tab of this page.
Fitment & Compatibility
The P14 element for the Triumph Rocket III, model years 2004 to 2018, across the versions built in that period. The standard airbox also takes the P08 if the air turns out cleaner than expected; the Rocket 3 from 2019 onwards uses a different element entirely.
