The 2021 MT-09 is sold on its character, and then it goes to work. An honest year on one of these is five mornings a week of the same twenty kilometres, a few long weekends and one summer trip. The air this triple swallows is decided by that week, not by the launch film, and the filter medium deserves to be chosen the same way. The SM212P14 suits the real duty cycle rather than the imagined one: a dry special nonwoven filtering at 14 microns where the standard P08 weave works at 80, and moving less air for it — 1,800 litres per square metre per second against 5,050 — because holding more back and letting more through are opposite requests.
Key Features
- Dry special nonwoven medium, filtration rated at 14 microns
- Airflow of 1,800 litres per square metre per second; the P08 in the same housing moves 5,050 at 80 microns
- Never oiled, so nothing on the element can travel downstream onto the intake sensors
- Cut to the series airbox of the 2021–2023 MT-09 and MT-09 SP: the original lifts out, this drops in, the fuelling map is untouched
- Serviced with an air line and refitted rather than thrown away, with a life meant to match the bike's
- Covered by a two-year guarantee starting the day you buy it
Reading your own year honestly
The trade only pays if you are truthful about the riding. If your MT-09 sees track days, or you genuinely spend time in the top third of the rev range on clean tarmac, the P08 is the better balanced part: 80 microns and 5,050 litres leave far more headroom for the moments when the triple is asking for air. The P14 belongs to the other version of the same bike — the one that commutes, parks outside all year and rides through winter grit and the dust farm traffic drags onto rural roads in August.
What the fine mat is catching
Dust is not one size. Coarse grit thrown up by a lorry falls out of the air within seconds; the fraction that stays airborne long enough to reach an airbox is much finer, and it is exactly the part a coarser medium waves through. Going from 80 microns to 14 closes most of that gap, and Sprint Filter recovers some of the lost flow with geometry, folding far more filtering area into the element than a flat panel of this footprint could carry. The ladder runs on to the T12 at 7 microns and 560 litres: each rung down retains more and passes less, and none is the best one.
Care and cleaning
The SM212P14 is dry from the day it is made, so looking after it needs no consumables. Take it out and run compressed air through the mat from the clean face, so the dirt leaves the way it arrived. Anything stubborn comes off with lukewarm water and a drop of mild washing-up liquid. Let it dry in open air only — no heat gun, no flame — and refit it dry. Sprint Filter's maintenance sheet sits in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
