The MT-10 runs a version of the crossplane four Yamaha developed for the R1, re-specified for road use: its own intake tract, its own cam timing, its own calibration. That re-specification is the model, and it deserves stating plainly on a page selling an intake part: nothing which drops into the standard airbox undoes it. The Sprint Filter SM238S is a dry polyester weave filtering at 80 microns with a rated 5,050 l/m²/sec, sitting where the original element sits. What it changes is the restriction ahead of the throttle bodies, and how that restriction behaves over the years.
Key Features
- Single-layer dry polyester weave with a filtration figure of 80 microns
- Threads from 22 microns in diameter, woven rather than pressed into a mat
- Rated airflow of 5,050 l/m²/sec, the medium specified for road and track use
- Around twice the filter area of other performance filters, inside the standard housing
- Never oiled at any point, so there is nothing to dose and nothing to migrate
- Built to last the life of the motorcycle and covered for two years from purchase
What the phrase 'no remap required' admits
Sprint Filter state that the element needs no remap, which is convenient — and is also an admission about scale. A change the fuelling does not have to be told about is not a change that turns up on a dyno sheet. A standard MT-10 with its standard ducts, airbox and exhaust will not feel stronger with this element fitted, and a seller promising otherwise is describing something else. Output on this machine was decided upstream by Yamaha, in parts that are not service items and are not for sale here.
What is actually being bought
Two things, both modest and both real. The first is a lower intake restriction than a loaded paper cartridge presents — not against a new cartridge, but against the one fitted since spring. The second matters more on a motorcycle somebody keeps: the restriction is resettable. Compressed air brings it back toward where it started, as often as you like, for as long as the bike lasts. Medium choice is a trade, not a ranking: a finer fabric holds back more and passes less, which is why the same housing is also catalogued with the 14-micron P14 for dusty routes and the 85-micron F1-85 for closed-circuit work. The P08 sits where most of these bikes are ridden.
Care and cleaning
Blow the element through with compressed air applied to the clean face, so what came in leaves the way it arrived. If a trip has left it visibly loaded, wash it in lukewarm water with a little mild detergent, rinse until the water runs clear and leave it in moving air until it is dry throughout — never against a heater, never over a flame, never refitted damp. No stage of the service involves oil. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet for the SM238S is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Drawn for the Yamaha MT-10 and MT-10 SP of 2022 to 2026, replacing the original element in the unmodified series airbox. This part number covers that one model, so there is no family list to compare against; the Fitment tab carries the entry.
