DescriptionThe whole story▼
Do not confuse this with the final-drive covers. This one sits on the engine and covers the timing belt of the horizontal cylinder — the forward-facing one on the 1262 Testastretta DVT. It is a single cover for one cylinder; the two-cylinder set is the separate order code MD-XD16-C78.
Key Features
- Cam belt cover for the horizontal (forward) cylinder only — the set for both cylinders is MD-XD16-C78
- Four configurations: 200 Plain and 245 Twill, each in clear coat or matt
- Autoclave carbon, dimensionally stable at the temperatures of a running cylinder head
- Fits on the original cam belt cover mounting points with the standard fasteners
- Comes off with the standard service procedure, so it does not complicate a belt inspection
An Engine Part, Not a Body Panel
Cam belt covers are the carbon parts that sit closest to real heat, and they are the ones where cure quality shows up soonest. A laminate with voids in it will take on moisture, and moisture trapped in a part that cycles from cold to engine temperature and back again does exactly what you would expect over a few hundred cycles. An autoclave-cured cover has a low enough void content that this simply does not happen.
Practically, there is also a service argument. Ducati timing belts are an inspection item, and a cover that warps or whose fastener bosses distort turns a routine check into an irritation. This one uses the original fixing pattern and comes away cleanly.
Fitment and Compatibility
Ducati XDiavel and XDiavel S, 2016 to 2024, horizontal cylinder. Fit with the engine cold. If you are replacing both covers, the set MD-XD16-C78 is the better purchase.
Road Approval
No ABE and no EC type-approval is published for this cover. It is an engine trim part with no effect on any approved characteristic; confirm the position for your registration before road use.
Horizontal Means the Front Cylinder
Ducati's terminology confuses people reasonably often, so: on an L-twin the horizontal cylinder is the one lying forward, pointing towards the front wheel, and the vertical cylinder stands up behind it. This cover is for the horizontal one — the cam belt cover you see first when standing on the right of the motorcycle.
If you are looking at your bike and are not certain which is which, order the set MD-XD16-C78 instead. It contains both and removes the question entirely, and it costs less than buying the two singly.
