DescriptionThe whole story▼
Two kilograms off the highest, furthest-back point of a 260 kg adventure bike. On a Super Ténéré that is not a dyno-sheet argument — it is the mass you have to lift when the machine is lying in gravel with luggage attached.
Key Features
- 3.8 kg against the standard 5.8 kg: 2.0 kg and 34.5 per cent less
- 1.2 PS more at 6,500 rpm and 2.0 Nm more at 6,150 rpm, both in the touring band
- Titanium muffler outer sleeve with a carbon fibre end cap
- Compatible with the Yamaha side cases, so a loaded Ténéré stays loaded
- Covers eleven model years, from the 2010 launch to the last bikes in 2020
- EC and ECE type approved, no remapping required
Z and ZE
Yamaha built the Super Ténéré in two specifications. The XT1200Z is the base machine, on the market from 2010. The XT1200ZE arrived in 2014 with electronically adjustable suspension, cruise control and a taller screen. The engine, the frame and the exhaust mounting are identical, so this silencer fits both — the difference is what sits above it, not what it bolts to.
Torque in the Right Place
The 2 Nm arrives at 6,150 rpm, and the 1.2 PS at 6,500. On a 1,199 cc parallel twin geared for long distances that is the band you hold on a motorway with a passenger and full panniers. It is a modest gain honestly placed, rather than a large one at a speed the bike rarely sees.
A Long-Lived Machine
The Super Ténéré ran for eleven model years with very little change, which is unusual and works in an owner's favour: parts made for a 2010 bike still fit a 2020 one, and the used market is deep enough that a good example is easy to find. A titanium silencer on a machine of that age will outlast whatever else needs attention.
Where the Ténéré Name Comes From
Ténéré is a region of the Sahara, and Yamaha has used the name since the Paris–Dakar machines of the early 1980s. The XT1200Z is the largest bike ever to carry it: a shaft-driven, 1,199 cc parallel twin built for crossing continents rather than for winning enduros. Everything about the motorcycle is sized for that, including a standard exhaust that weighs 5.8 kg.
What Stays Standard
This is a slip-on, so the header and the catalytic converter are untouched and the engine management needs no remapping. The standard silencer bolts back on if the bike is sold in original condition — worth knowing on a machine that holds its value in the used market the way a Super Ténéré does.
