DescriptionThe whole story▼
Under two kilograms. The finished silencer weighs 1.99 kg against a standard unit of 3.29, and on a 400 that is bought as a first big bike or a licence-restricted machine, 1.3 kg is a real share of the motorcycle.
Key Features
- 1.99 kg against the standard 3.29 kg: 1.3 kg and 39.5 per cent less
- Sandblasted high-grade titanium muffler outer sleeve
- Link pipe, end cap, heat shield and inner structure all in stainless steel
- End cap with imprints, monochrome logo sticker
- 0.9 PS at 8,000 rpm and 1.0 Nm at 6,700 rpm
- Heat shield included, to prevent burning or damage to the rider's gear
- Twenty minutes to fit, EC and ECE type approved
A Shape Thirty Years Old
Akrapovic states that the muffler design here was first introduced thirty years ago and has been updated many times since. That is unusual to admit in a product description, and it is the right decision for these motorcycles: the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X are neo-retro machines, and a silencer that looked like it came off a 2020 sportbike would sit wrongly on either.
The sandblasted finish belongs to the same idea. It is matt rather than polished, closer to the look of an older machine, and it hides fingerprints and road film in a way a mirror surface does not.
Titanium Where It Shows, Steel Everywhere Else
Only the outer sleeve is titanium. The link pipe, the inner structure, the end cap and the heat shield are stainless steel. On a bike in this class that is the right split: titanium buys the weight where the largest surface is, and steel takes the heat and the impacts for less money.
It also keeps the price where an owner of a 400 can justify it, which matters more here than on a litre bike.
Two Bikes, One Platform
Triumph's 398 cc single appears in the Speed 400 roadster and the Scrambler 400 X, which adds a 19-inch front wheel, longer travel, wider bars and block-pattern tyres. The frame and the exhaust mounting are shared, so one silencer fits both — and both sit inside the A2 power limit, which the type approval leaves untouched.
Made in India, Engineered in Hinckley
The Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X are built by Bajaj in Pune to Triumph's design, which is how they reach the price they do. That has nothing to do with how this silencer fits — the exhaust mounting is Triumph's own geometry and Akrapovic developed the part against it — but it is worth knowing why a 400 with this level of finish costs what it does.
What it does mean is that a great many of these bikes are on the road, which makes parts for them worth developing properly rather than adapting from something else.
Fitment and Compatibility
S-T4SO1-HDT covers the Triumph Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X from model year 2023 through 2026. The heat shield is supplied with the silencer.
Road Approval
EC type approval and ECE type approval, with the certificates supplied and downloadable here. The silencer is a legal replacement part for road use in the European Union and does not affect an A2 restriction.
