DescriptionThe whole story▼
Five point one kilograms off a motorcycle that weighs about 170. In proportion, that is the largest weight reduction in this whole catalogue relative to the machine it goes on — and the 3.3 PS on a 37 PS engine is close to a nine per cent gain, which no litre bike in this range comes near.
Key Features
- 3.1 kg against the standard 8.2 kg: 5.1 kg and 62.2 per cent less
- 40.0 PS, up from 37.2 PS — a gain of nearly nine per cent
- Complete system with a carbon fibre muffler outer sleeve
- One part number covering twelve model years
- Pure racing sound output
- No road approval — circuit use only
Small Engines Gain the Most
A 321 cc twin has very little headroom, and Yamaha's standard exhaust spends most of it on emissions and noise compliance. Removing the whole system and replacing it with a straight-through racing design recovers a proportion of power that a 200 PS superbike simply does not have available.
Both the power and the torque gain land at 11,550 rpm, which on this engine is where it is being ridden on a circuit. This is a track part for a track use case, and it behaves like one.
Twelve Model Years, One System
Yamaha has left the R3 platform's exhaust route essentially untouched since 2014, across the MT-03 roadster, the YZF-R3 and the Japanese YZF-R25. One part number covers all of them, from 2014 through 2026.
That is unusual and worth knowing: a used R3 bought cheaply takes the same system as a current one.
What the Weight Means Here
On a 250 kg tourer, five kilograms is a rounding error. On a 170 kg lightweight it is roughly three per cent of the whole motorcycle, taken from high on the right-hand side where it does the most damage to how quickly the bike changes direction.
This is the rare case where a rider will notice the weight before they notice the power.
The Bike That Racing Series Are Built On
The R3 is the machine behind a long list of one-make racing series, because it is cheap, reliable and slow enough that riders learn lines rather than horsepower. Those grids are full of machines running exactly this kind of exhaust.
If you are preparing an R3 for a cup series, check your regulations before ordering — some championships specify the standard system, and others allow a full replacement.
Not for the Road
An MT-03 or R3 is very often somebody's first motorcycle, held on an A2 licence. This system has no road approval, and fitting it to a road-registered bike puts the registration at risk. It belongs on a track machine.
