DescriptionThe whole story▼

A hand-laid carbon part for a 125 cc mini bike. That sounds absurd for about three seconds, and then you remember what a Grom actually is: the most heavily modified motorcycle Honda sells, bought by people who spend more on it than it cost.

Key Features

  • Hand-crafted carbon fibre, replacing the standard shield
  • Made for the Akrapovic Slip-On Line on the MSX125
  • Covers the 2021 generation of MSX125 and Grom
  • Akrapovic publishes no weight figure for it

The Grom Is a Special Case

Honda's MSX125 exists in a category of its own. It makes about 10 PS, costs less than a set of race leathers, and has generated an aftermarket that would suit a superbike — big-bore kits, adjustable suspension, race bodywork and, yes, hand-made carbon fibre.

Nobody buys this shield to improve a commuter. They buy it because the motorcycle is a project, and on a project the standard is what everything else on the bike is held to.

What Is Visible on a Small Bike

A Grom is 761 mm long in the wheelbase and has almost no bodywork. The exhaust, the shield and the swingarm are effectively the right-hand side of the motorcycle, and a woven carbon panel there is not a detail — it is a substantial fraction of what anybody sees.

On a litre bike the same part disappears under a fairing. Here it does the opposite.

The Manufacturer Gives No Numbers

Akrapovic's entry for this part runs to two sentences and contains not a single measurement — no mass, no wall thickness, no temperature rating. This page will not invent any.

The construction is not in doubt: cloth laid up by hand, cured, trimmed, and bolted to the points the factory shield came off.

Where the Money Goes

This shield costs a visible share of what a used Grom fetches, and the explanation is labour, not raw material. Woven carbon is cheap by the metre. Somebody laying it into a tool, curing it under heat and dressing the edge afterwards is not.

Several sets of hands touch each one before it is boxed, and that is the entire gap between it and a stamped steel panel.

Only With the Akrapovic Can

The mould was taken around Akrapovic's own MSX125 silencer. Honda's factory exhaust sits differently, so the shield neither lines up nor achieves what a matched pair is bought for.

Two Names, One Motorcycle

MSX125 in Europe, Grom in North America and Japan. Same machine, same exhaust, same shield — the name on the side panel depends on where it was sold, and it makes no difference to what fits.

Six Model Years

Honda revised the MSX125 for 2021 with a new frame, a five-speed gearbox and different bodywork, and has kept the exhaust mounting since. One shield covers the run to date.

Road Approval

Not applicable. A heat shield is neither an emissions nor a noise component. Whether the MSX125 is road legal depends on the silencer behind it.
