Most people read a dust filter as a filter for tracks and gravel, and then decide it is not for them. It is worth reading the label the other way round. Dust is less a place than a period: three rainless weeks when every field edge and every diversion around roadworks gives up powder, harvest traffic leaving soil on the tarmac, a dry crosswind carrying it across a road that looks entirely clean. A Svartpilen 200 does not have to leave the asphalt to spend a summer breathing that, and the PM200P14 is the element specified for it.
Key Features
- P14 dry nonwoven rated at 14 µm — Sprint Filter's medium for dust, daily use and distance
- 1,800 l/m²/sec of flow against 5,050 for the P08: the finer rating is bought, not given
- No filter oil at any stage, so nothing can travel downstream onto the sensors in the intake
- Fits the standard airbox exactly as the paper panel does, with no modification and no remap
- Cleaned with compressed air and refitted, rather than binned and reordered
- Two-year guarantee from the date of purchase; designed to outlast the motorcycle
The season decides, and the season changes
Air quality on a fixed commute is not a constant. The same twelve kilometres are clean in April and loaded in August, and a paper element cannot tell you which it has been living through — it only accumulates. What a washable element offers is the ability to answer that question with an air line whenever you want to, and the finer nonwoven means a bad fortnight is caught in the filter rather than passed through it. In a wet year you will have paid a little flow for nothing. That is the deal, and it is the right way round.
What it will and will not do
It will not add power. An insert filter does not make a standard 199.5 cc single noticeably stronger, and anyone selling one on that basis is selling something else. What it does is keep intake restriction low and stable across an interval instead of only just after a service, and it does that while holding back considerably more of what dry air carries than the standard medium can. If your riding never sees a dusty week, the P08 is the better-matched part and we would rather say so.
Care and cleaning
An air line on the clean side, worked outward across the whole face, is the routine service and usually the entire one. For a heavier load, lukewarm water and a little mild detergent will release what the air left; rinse until the water leaves clear. The PM200P14 then dries in moving air and only there — heat of any kind damages the medium, and a flame ruins it outright — and it is refitted dry, with nothing applied to it.
