What a filter misses does not stop at the cylinder wall. Fine material that gets past the medium is carried through the engine, and a share of it ends up in the oil, circulating past bearings and gears until an oil filter traps it or a drain plug removes it. That is why filtration and service intervals are two halves of one subject, and it is the honest starting point for the Sprint Filter PM111S F1-85 on a 2026 Kawasaki Z1100: this is a racing medium, 85 microns against the 80 of the standard P08, fitted to a road motorcycle that runs road service intervals.
Key Features
- Racing polyester, dry: 15,000 l/m²/sec behind a weave that filters at 85 microns
- Of the two, the standard P08 is the finer weave — 80 microns, at 5,050 l/m²/sec
- Roughly double the filtering surface of other performance filters sits behind it
- Never oiled, so no film is carried downstream onto sensors or throttle bodies
- It takes the place of the original element in the standard airbox — no modification, no remap
- Washable and reusable; warranty runs two years from the date of purchase
A racing medium assumes a racing calendar
Coarser filtration is not reckless in the paddock, because a race engine is opened, measured and refreshed on a schedule counted in operating hours, and its oil is changed far more often than any road manual asks for. Nothing gets a long time to do damage. A Z1100 ridden on the road works to the opposite rhythm: long intervals, an engine that will not be opened for years, and an owner who has no way of seeing the inside of it. Fit this element there and the trade is real but uncovered — the flow was bought, the shorter inspection cycle that pays for it was not. If the maintenance plan is not going to change, the standard P08 is the right filter, and on genuinely dusty roads the P14 (14 microns, 1,800 l/m²/sec) is the deliberate step the other way.
Where the Z1100 does have a case
This is a strong litre-class four, and riders do take machines like it to track days and fast road schools, where the throttle spends real time wide open near the top of the rev range. That is the one operating point at which 15,000 l/m²/sec is more than a number on a box. Even then, the promise stays modest: a filter can only give back the restriction it caused itself. What the element does offer regardless is a resistance that is washed back to its starting value rather than climbing until a part is thrown away.
Care and cleaning
Most of the time the PM111S F1-85 needs nothing but compressed air from the clean side, blown outwards. A hard season earns a wash: lukewarm water, a mild detergent, a rinse until the water runs clear, then open air until it is dry through. Heat and flame are never part of that, and neither is oil. It goes back in dry. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Kawasaki Z1100, 2026. The same PM111S F1-85 element covers five machines built around this airbox, across the Ninja SX models and the two Bimota machines that use the engine; the complete list is in the Fitment tab.
