Almost every service item on a GSX-R 1000/R has a value attached to it. Suspension clickers have positions, the chain has a slack figure, the tyres have pressures, the brake fluid has a date. Get one wrong and the motorcycle behaves differently afterwards. The air filter is the exception: there is nothing on it to set. It comes out, it is looked at, it goes back the one way it fits, and nothing about the bike has moved. That is what makes it the sensible first job to take on yourself — and it is also why fitting a washable element like the Sprint Filter P08 PM156S changes more than the data sheet suggests.
Key Features
- Single-layer woven polyester, run dry and never oiled
- Filtration at 80 microns with a rated flow of 5,050 litres per square metre per second
- Woven from polyester thread of ø 22 microns upwards, the aperture set by the weave
- Roughly twice the working cloth of a typical performance element
- Takes the paper panel's place in the series airbox: nothing cut, no remap
- Washed and refitted instead of binned, with two years of Sprint Filter cover
A job with nothing to restore
Because there is no setting to recover, inspecting this element carries no risk and no consequence. With a disposable panel that is still not free: you only open the box when a replacement is on the bench, because looking at a dirty one you cannot clean leaves you with a decision and no way to act on it. A washable element removes that link. The check and the service are the same operation, and the interval afterwards is set by what you actually saw rather than by a number printed in a schedule.
What the element does, and what it does not
It will not make a standard GSX-R 1000/R noticeably stronger. Nothing dropped into an unmodified airbox does, and the fuelling was signed off with a filter in place. The honest benefit is a lower and, more importantly, steadier restriction: the P08 starts with about double the cloth, so a given dust load covers a smaller share of it, and compressed air returns the element to where it began. Sprint Filter measured the dry P08 holding 93.13 per cent of 100-micron test particles against 76.42 per cent for four-layer oiled cotton. Where the air is harder the range weaves finer — P037 at 37 microns and 4,500 litres, P14 at 14 and 1,800, T12 at 7 and 560 — and every step finer is paid for in flow. That is a trade set by the air, not a ladder with a best rung.
Care and cleaning
Routine service for the PM156S is compressed air, held to the clean face so the dirt leaves the way it came in. When air will not shift it, wash the element in lukewarm water with a mild detergent and rinse until the water runs clear. Dry it fully in moving air, never with a heat gun and never near a flame, and refit it dry with nothing applied. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
