Before the Tank Moved
This generation carries its fuel above the engine in a conventional tank rather than in the low-slung arrangement KTM introduced in 2021. It is a taller-feeling motorcycle as a result and the redesign that followed was a genuine step forward.
A Hundred and Sixty Horsepower
The LC8 in adventure tune was already the most powerful engine in the class by a substantial margin. KTM paired it with cornering ABS, lean-sensitive traction control and semi-active WP damping on the S, which was a comprehensive package for 2017.
Aligned Clamp Bolts
Both on a line square to the handlebar, which is KTM's own arrangement. Adventure riders change master cylinders less often than track riders, so this is the more likely drilling on a used example of this generation.
Hardware Everywhere
Hand guards, a navigation cradle, auxiliary light switches and often a phone mount. Adventure bikes gather more on their handlebars than anything else, and the dedicated drilling recovers space where the cockpit runs out of it.
Winter Gloves for Months
These motorcycles are ridden year-round by riders who use them properly. Under thick gloves the machined step between one control and the next is the only reliable way to be certain which button was pressed.
Sealed Against What It Meets
Elements sealed inside a one-piece milled body. Grit works into a moulded joint and stays there, which is why sealing rather than covering is the requirement on a machine hosed down after every trail section.
Two Anodised Finishes
Black and orange, converted into the surface. Both dull with contact rather than chipping, which on a bike that will be dropped at some point is the property that matters.
