The FJ-09 is the version of this platform that gets ridden towards mountains. A faired sport-tourer with luggage on the back spends its best days climbing passes, and thin air is the one condition an engine cannot argue with: the higher the road goes, the less oxygen arrives in each cylinder filling. The engine management compensates as far as it can, but it can only work with the air that reaches it. The Sprint Filter P08 PM149S is there so that the restriction left in the intake tract is the airbox's own, and not an element quietly closing up on top of it.
Key Features
- Filtration at 80 microns, with the medium passing 5,050 litres per square metre per second
- A dry P08 polyester weave: no oil is used, so there is no film that can end up on the intake sensors
- Filtering surface: roughly twice that of other performance filters
- It goes into the standard airbox in place of the original — no cutting, no remap, no effect on homologation
- Compressed air restores it; washable and reusable, not disposable
- Backed for two years, counted from the purchase date
Where the margin is thinnest
On a long ascent the engine is asked to hold a high, steady load precisely where the air is least generous, and a partly loaded filter takes its share from the same shrinking budget. None of this appears as a fault. It appears as a bike that feels flatter than it did on the same road two summers ago, and there is no moment at which it happened. Keeping the intake side stable is the cheap half of that problem, and the only half that can be solved with an air line in a hotel car park.
Choosing the medium for the route
Sprint Filter weave the same idea in different densities, and the numbers are a trade rather than a ranking. The P08 filters at 80 microns and flows 5,050 litres per square metre per second. The water-repellent P037 tightens filtration to 37 microns and flows 4,500, the P14 goes to 14 microns at 1,800, and the T12 reaches 7 microns at 560. Finer weave means more retention and less flow, every time. For a road-legal sport-tourer that crosses weather rather than deserts, the P08 sits where it should — and for reference, Sprint Filter measured it retaining 93.13 per cent of 100-micron test particles against 76.42 per cent for a four-layer oiled cotton filter.
Care and cleaning
Heat must never touch this element: no hot-air gun, no flame, no shortcut to get it dry. Open air is the method, and the drying has to be complete before anything goes back into the airbox. Routine cleaning is compressed air blown from the clean side outwards; where dirt has gone further, lukewarm water with a mild detergent and a rinse until the water runs clear will deal with it. Oil plays no part at any stage; the polyester never carried any. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Yamaha FJ-09, 2015 to 2026. The same PM149S element serves six machines built around this airbox, including the FZ-09, the MT-09, the Niken 850/GT and the XSR 900; the full list is in the Fitment tab.
