The Milano is a motorcycle bought with the eyes. That is not a criticism — it is a handsome thing and it was meant to be — but it does describe how most of them are used. They come out on good days, they cover a few hundred kilometres in a season, and they spend the rest of the year under a cover in a garage. Almost every assumption built into a service schedule is a mileage assumption, and almost none of them apply.

What happens to a filter that is not being used

A paper element sitting in an airbox through a European winter is not being worn out by dust. It is taking up moisture from the air around it, swelling slightly at the pleat folds, drying imperfectly and doing it again next month. Cellulose does not recover its original shape from that cycle, so by spring the element is more restrictive than it was in October despite having filtered almost nothing. The odometer records none of this, which is why low-mileage motorcycles so often have filters in worse condition than their owners would ever guess.

A medium that does not care how long it waits

Woven polyester behaves differently. It takes on surface water and sheds it without swelling, so a season of standing costs it nothing structurally, and its aperture in spring is the aperture from the previous autumn. Where a paper element in a lightly used motorcycle is replaced on the calendar rather than on merit, the P08 CM170S is simply inspected: lift the seat, look, blow it through from the clean side if it needs it, and put the same element back. Over the long, low-mileage life these machines tend to have, that is the difference between a recurring purchase and none at all.

Care and cleaning

Blow it through from the clean side with compressed air, working outwards. For a deeper clean, wash in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinse until the water runs clear, and let it dry fully in air — never with heat, never with a flame.
