Eight Newton Metres at Seven Thousand
That is a large mid-range gain, and on an S 1000 XR it is the useful one. This is a sports tourer built on superbike underpinnings — ridden with luggage and a passenger as often as it is ridden hard — and torque at 6,950 rpm is what a loaded XR uses overtaking.
The 7.8 PS at 7,200 arrives at almost the same point. Both figures describe the same lift in the same part of the curve.
Why the Standard Header Is So Heavy
BMW routes four header pipes into a large collector with the catalytic converter inside, all of it under the engine. Meeting Euro 5 on a 170 PS four takes volume, and volume in steel takes weight.
Removing 6 kg from the lowest point of a 226 kg motorcycle is the largest single weight reduction available to an XR owner.
Both XR Models
BMW's M 1000 XR arrived in 2024 with more power, revised electronics and M-badged brakes. It shares the engine architecture and the exhaust route with the S 1000 XR, and both take this header across 2020 to 2026.
Three Hours
180 minutes, and the reason is packaging: on a faired sports tourer the radiator, the oil cooler and the lower fairing all sit between a spanner and the exhaust ports. This is workshop work with the motorcycle on a lift.
Remapping Recommended
Akrapovic notes that a fresh ECU map gives the best performance, throttle response and durability with this header. Removing the catalytic converter changes what the lambda sensors read, and the standard map was written around one being present.
Keep the Original Assembly
BMW's header is a large, awkward part to store, but an S 1000 XR offered with its complete factory exhaust is a considerably easier sale. It is worth the space in the loft.
Seven Model Years
BMW kept this exhaust route from the 2020 S 1000 XR through the arrival of the M 1000 XR in 2024 and on to 2026. One header covers both machines and the whole span.
Nearly Seventy Per Cent
68.2 per cent is among the largest proportional savings from any header in this catalogue, and it is the largest in absolute terms — six kilograms from one component. BMW simply had a great deal of steel down there.
Road Approval
None. This product does not meet emission compliance requirements for street or highway use.
