Nothing on this element carries a service interval, and nothing can. A paper panel has one because it is written into the motorcycle's maintenance schedule; a filter specified for the life of the machine is cleaned when it needs cleaning, and only the rider can know when that is. So a small duty moves to the owner: a note of the date and the distance at every clean, kept somewhere that survives. Without it a fine medium such as PM171T12 becomes a part nobody can assess.
Key Features
- Dry polyester special non-woven with a 7-micron rating
- Flow rated at 560 l/m²/sec, the lowest figure published for any medium in the range
- No oil at any stage, so nothing can be carried through to the throttle bodies
- About twice the filtering surface of a typical performance element, in the original frame
- A straight swap for the paper panel in the series airbox, with no remap
- Cleaned and reused for as long as the motorcycle runs, two-year warranty
Why the written record matters here
A fine medium collects a load that is invisible. Seven-micron particles are far below what an eye resolves, and a mat that filters through its depth does not display its state the way a woven panel held up to the light does. The usual instincts therefore fail: it looks much the same after a hard month as when new. Nor does the machine help, since the engine management compensates quietly for a rising intake restriction long before anything is noticeable from the saddle. A written record replaces the missing signal, and it need not be elaborate — date, distance, a line about the riding.
Seven microns against 560 litres
The two figures describe one exchange. Closing the material to 7 microns holds back the fine mineral fraction that a coarser weave passes; the price is a rated 560 l/m²/sec where the standard element for this airbox is rated at 5,050. Finer retains more and flows less, in every material — a trade rather than a ranking, and this is the far end of it rather than the top. For a well-travelled XR crossing dry unmade roads it is the right end to be at. On tarmac it is more filtration than the road asks for, and it never becomes a power part: nothing seated inside a standard airbox is.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air is the routine, applied to the clean face and moved slowly so the load leaves the way it entered instead of being driven into the mat. Water at hand temperature with mild detergent is for the cleans air alone will not finish, rinsed until clear. Then moving air, patiently, with no heat involved at any point, and the element goes back dry. Write the date down while the tools are still out. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
For the BMW S 1000 XR built from 2020 to 2026, seated in the unmodified airbox. Two machines share the element: this one and the M 1000 XR from 2021. The earlier S 1000 XR of 2015 to 2019 is a different intake on a different part number, so the model year is the first thing to check before ordering. Both current entries are listed with their spans in the Fitment tab.
