An intake element does not make a standard motorcycle stronger, and any description claiming otherwise is selling the wrong story. What changes is the shape of the intake restriction over time. A paper cartridge is at its best on the day it goes in and only moves in one direction afterwards; a dry weave is taken out, blown through and returned to its own starting point, so the restriction stops drifting upward between services. Nor does a freer element mean a dirtier engine. After a hard season, wash it in lukewarm water with a little mild detergent and rinse until the water runs clear. Let it dry in air alone — never a hairdryer, heat gun or flame — and refit only once it is dry right through.
