An afternoon on unsurfaced roads bills a motorcycle in several places at once. Stones find the radiator and the underside of the engine, grit works into the chain and shortens it measurably, dust settles against every seal on the machine. Almost none of that can be dealt with beforehand from a parts list. The airbox is the exception — it is the one exposure of that afternoon that can be specified in advance — and that is what the T12 CM61T12 is for on a Hypermotard 950 or 950 SP. One item on a longer list, addressed because it happens to be addressable.
Key Features
- Dry non-woven polyester rated at 7 microns, the finest medium Sprint Filter offers
- Throughput of 560 litres per square metre per second at that rating
- Nothing is oiled, so nothing can be carried downstream into the intake tract
- Around double the filtering surface of other performance filters
- Occupies the standard panel position in the series airbox, with no remap
- Cleaned and refitted rather than replaced; two years of warranty from purchase
The one exposure that can be specified
Deciding on a medium is not the same kind of act as deciding on tyres or a chain, because the filter is chosen once and then works unattended for a season. That is the argument for choosing it against the worst surface the machine will meet rather than the average one, and it is also the reason the choice is worth making before the trip rather than after the first dusty day. What it does not do is widen the scope of the ride: the rest of the exposure list is exactly as long as it was.
Two costs on two different clocks
The flow given up by a fine medium is only noticed where the engine is drawing everything it can, which on a road-registered supermoto amounts to short bursts. The retention it buys is working in every second the engine runs, dusty or not. Those two halves of the trade run on different clocks, and that asymmetry is the whole case for the T12 where conditions justify it — 7 microns and 560 litres per square metre per second against the standard 80 microns and 5,050. It is a trade, not a ranking, and it is not a power modification either: no element inside an unmodified airbox makes a standard 950 quicker.
Care and cleaning
An air line on the clean side, blown outward, restores the medium after a dusty run and takes minutes. Where mud or a wet road has left more behind, wash it in lukewarm water with a mild washing-up detergent and rinse until the water is clear. Then let it dry through in moving air with no heat of any sort — a heat gun or a flame ends the life of the material far more surely than dirt does — and refit it dry and untreated. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
For the Ducati Hypermotard 950 and 950 SP built between 2019 and 2025. The same element also covers the Hypermotard 939 of 2016 to 2018, two machines in total; both are named in the Fitment tab.
