Filtration and price normally climb together, which makes it easy to treat the more expensive element as the better one. For the airbox of the CFMOTO MT-X 800 that shortcut breaks down. This 7-micron nonwoven is listed below the 80-micron standard element — roughly three quarters of what the P08 asks — even though it is by some distance the finer of the two. Whatever explains that ordering, it is not a ladder of quality, and it means the price column cannot settle the choice for you. Something else has to, and on this machine that something is the surface you ride on.
Key Features
- Dry polyester nonwoven rated at 7 microns and 560 l/m²/sec
- Fine enough for dust, grit and airborne sand; chosen by terrain, not by rank
- Never oiled — no coating to dose, dry out or migrate onto sensors
- Replaces the paper panel in the unmodified airbox; no remap required
- Roughly twice the filtering area of the usual performance element
- Cleaned with compressed air; two-year warranty from date of purchase
The number the price will not tell you
Set the two elements side by side and the difference is legible without any interpretation. The standard weave is rated at 5,050 l/m²/sec and stops particles down to 80 microns; this one is rated at 560 and stops them down to 7. More retention, much less flow — one trade, stated twice. Nothing in those figures ranks the elements, because they are not answers to the same question. The relevant question is what the intake is being asked to swallow, and only the person riding the MT-X 800 knows that. Gravel access tracks, dry unsurfaced roads and a season spent behind other vehicles are arguments for the fine nonwoven. Clean tarmac is an argument against it.
What you are not buying
You are not buying performance. A drop-in element does not make a standard MT-X 800 noticeably stronger, whichever medium goes in, and the T12 in particular hands flow away on purpose. What it buys is a filter you can restore. Dust that a disposable panel keeps until the panel is discarded comes back out of this one with compressed air, so the intake restriction returns to its starting value at each service instead of climbing steadily between them. In dusty use that difference shows up sooner and more often, which is exactly the environment the medium was drawn up for.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air on the clean face, worked outwards, is the whole service: whatever the nonwoven held leaves the way it entered. Where the load is greasy rather than dry, lukewarm water and a little mild detergent will lift it, followed by a rinse until the water runs clear. Then let it dry in moving air, unhurried — never with a heat gun, a radiator or an open flame — and fit it dry, with nothing applied to the surface. The maintenance sheet for the SM292T12 is in the Downloads tab on this page.
