The facts.
DescriptionThe whole story▼
One Ducati airbox, and two lists that do not cover the same motorcycles. The woven standard element for this box is catalogued against twenty Ducati models. PM127P14, the non-woven one on this page, is catalogued against eleven. The 1299 appears on both lists, and the shorter of the two is the more interesting, because somebody had to decide what went on it.
Key Features
- Dry non-woven medium, delivered oil-free and never oiled in service
- Filtration rated at 14 microns, against 80 for the woven element in the same box
- 1,800 l/m²/sec of rated flow, against 5,050 for that woven element
- Goes in where the factory panel came out, with no housing work and no remap
- Blown through with an air line instead of reordered at every interval
- Two years of warranty from the date of purchase
A shorter list is a judgement
A filter medium is specified for a housing, so a manufacturer could offer every medium for every box and let buyers sort it out. Sprint Filter has not done that here. Nine of the twenty Ducatis sharing this airbox are not on the shorter list, which says the range was drawn with some view of where finer filtration earns its lower flow — and that the 1299 was thought to be one of the places where it might. Being on the shorter list is not a compliment paid to the motorcycle, and it is not a recommendation either. It is an indication that somebody could imagine an owner for whom this would be the right answer.
What that leaves the owner to settle
Only the part the catalogue cannot know: which air this particular 1299 lives in. A machine trailered to circuits and ridden on a swept surface is well served by the woven element and its higher flow. One ridden on public roads through a dry summer meets a fine airborne load all day and gains from the finer rating, at a flow ceiling it will not go near. Neither choice releases any performance — a 1,285 cc twin is not being strangled by a panel filter, and the honest case for this one is made entirely on what it keeps out.
Care and cleaning
Use compressed air from the clean face outward; that is the routine and it covers almost everything. When it no longer suffices, wash the mat in warm water with mild detergent, rinse until the water is clear, and let it dry completely in air — heat and open flame both wreck it, so neither comes near. PM127P14 is refitted dry, with no oiling stage at any point. The Downloads tab carries Sprint Filter's cleaning document.
