The facts.
DescriptionThe whole story▼
The one irreversible mistake with a washable filter is made after the washing. A dry polyester element has to go back into the airbox completely dry, and it has to get there without help — no heat gun, no radiator, no hairdryer, no flame. Heat distorts the weave and the frame, and a distorted panel does not seal. On a travel bike like the Norden 901 that turns drying time into a planning question, which is the real reason to know the rule before you need it.
Key Features
- Dries in ambient moving air; the process needs no equipment whatsoever
- Dry polyester weave, 80-micron filtration, no oil at any stage
- Roughly twice the working area of comparable performance elements for this box
- Drops into the standard airbox with no modification and no fuelling change
- Cleaned with air alone in the usual case, which avoids drying altogether
- Two years of warranty, counted from purchase, on a part built to stay with the bike
Why heat is forbidden
Polyester is stable across the temperatures a motorcycle produces in normal use, which is a different thing from tolerating a heat gun held close. Concentrated heat softens the fibres and the bonding at the frame, and the damage does not necessarily show as a hole — it shows as a panel that no longer sits flat, which is worse, because it goes back in looking fine and then lets unfiltered air past the rim. Drying in air takes longer and costs nothing but patience.
Planning around it on a long trip
Because washing commits you to a drying period, the sensible approach on a journey is to keep the PM155S to air alone: blow it out from the clean side at fuel stops or in the evening, and leave water for a halt of a day or more. If a river crossing or a wet gravel section has genuinely soaked and silted the panel, that is the moment to wash it and to accept the wait, which is why washing belongs to a rest day rather than to a stage. None of this is exotic maintenance. It is a bowl, a mild detergent and time.
Care and cleaning
Air from the clean face outwards is the everyday routine and calls for no drying at all. When water is required: hand-warm, a mild detergent, gentle agitation, a full rinse, then somewhere airy and shaded until the weave is dry right through. Squeeze nothing, wring nothing, heat nothing. The illustrated sequence is available from the Downloads tab. It goes back in bare and dry, because oil plays no part in how this medium works.
