The facts.
DescriptionThe whole story▼
The 1260 Pikes Peak gave up the pretence. A seventeen-inch front wheel, Öhlins at both ends, a carbon front mudguard and bars that put weight on the rider's wrists: this is a sports bike wearing adventure clothing, and it is ridden accordingly. Owners of these do not commute on them. They take them out on good roads on good days, use the throttle rather than hold it, and cover comparatively few kilometres at comparatively high load. PM127S suits that pattern, and so does the way it is maintained.
Key Features
- Dry weave with no coating — nothing to be drawn towards the sensors
- Roughly double the filtering area of other performance panels
- Drops straight into the series airbox without modification or a reflash
- Air line service, water wash when the season has been long
- Made to stay with the motorcycle rather than be renewed at intervals
- Two years of warranty from purchase
A sports bike wearing adventure clothing
Every time the throttle is opened hard, the engine calls for a step increase in the volume reaching it. Because a panel's restriction climbs with that volume, a half-loaded element charges most at exactly those moments — and this bike's whole character is built from them. There is no dashboard warning for it, because the injection simply fuels what turns up; the bike just answers a little less sharply than it did. It will not make it quicker on a good road to fit a new panel. It will stop the answer getting slower.
The odometer is the wrong measure
Service schedules count distance, and a bike like this covers little of it while working the engine hard for most of what it does cover. The result is a filter that has done far more work than the mileage suggests and a service book that has not yet asked for anything. An element you can simply take out, look at, clean and refit sidesteps the disagreement entirely — you service it when the cloth says so, not when the counter does.
Care and cleaning
The panel is cleaned from the inside out: compressed air on the clean face, worked outward, so that whatever is held in the weave leaves by the route it entered. Where that no longer clears it, use hand-warm water with a mild detergent and rinse until the water runs clear, then let it dry completely in air. No heat in any form and no flame. It is refitted dry. Sprint Filter's care instructions are in the Downloads tab.
