The facts.
DescriptionThe whole story▼
Sprint Filter builds two finer cloths for this airbox, and the series Monster 1200 is catalogued for neither of them. The 14 µm nonwoven and the 7 µm mat are listed for the Scrambler 800, the Hypermotards and a one-year special edition; the largest engine in the housing, 1198 cc of Testastretta 11°, is listed with the standard weave alone. That is not an oversight but a judgement about what this engine is for and how much air it has to be given — and it means that within this case the CM61S is the whole decision rather than the first of three.
Key Features
- The weave works dry; no oil is added at manufacture or after cleaning
- Around double the filtering surface of other performance filters, which counts for more behind 1198 cc
- 80 µm filtration rated at 5,050 l/m²/sec, the most open cloth offered for this case
- Takes the place of the factory panel in the standard airbox with nothing else altered
- Reused after cleaning instead of being replaced at each service
- Two years of cover from the purchase date
Displacement raises the stakes
Resistance across a filter is not a fixed figure — it grows with the volume drawn through it. The same element that has an easy life on an 803 cc twin is working considerably harder behind 1198 cc at full throttle, and a partly loaded cloth is felt sooner as a result. Twice the surface means the medium spends its time at a smaller fraction of what it can pass. That is an argument for consistency, not for extra power; no drop-in element gives a standard engine that.
Eight model years, three states of tune
The standard bike, the S and the R all sit inside the 2014 to 2021 window on a shared intake, so a single part number serves the lot. It also serves the Monster 797 and 821, the Hypermotard and Hyperstrada families, the SuperSport and the Scramblers — twenty-four machines in all, which is why a code reaching back to bikes built in 2006 remains easy to buy today.
Care and cleaning
The routine is an air line: clean face first, blowing outward, until nothing more comes off. When the CM61S needs more than that, wash it gently in tepid water with a sparing amount of mild detergent, rinse it thoroughly, and let it dry through completely in air alone. Heat guns, radiators and flames all destroy the medium. Refit it dry — there is nothing to oil. Sprint Filter's service sheet is filed in the Downloads tab.
