The facts.
DescriptionThe whole story▼
Of the twenty-four Ducatis that take this airbox, only two are catalogued with all three of Sprint Filter's cloths, and the Hypermotard 939 is one of them. That makes the choice real here rather than automatic. The standard 80 µm weave, a 14 µm nonwoven and a 7 µm mat are three different answers to the same question, and the CM61S is the first of them: the most open medium of the three, and the one specified when the bike is used on the road it was sold for.
Key Features
- An unoiled polyester weave, dry in service and dry again after every wash
- Filtering area around twice that of other performance filters
- 80 µm filtration at a rated 5,050 l/m²/sec — the highest throughput of the three cloths offered here
- Exchanges directly with the paper panel in the standard airbox; no modification and no remap
- Washable and reusable, meant to see out the motorcycle rather than a service interval
- Two years of warranty from the day of purchase
Finer is not better, it is different
Each step down in aperture holds back more and passes less: the nonwoven runs at 1,800 l/m²/sec and the extreme mat at 560. That is a trade, not a ranking. A cloth chosen for a dusty piste is the wrong cloth for a 937 cc twin used on tarmac, where the air is comparatively clean and the engine's appetite is the binding constraint. Pick the medium for the ground under the wheels, not for the smallest number on the page.
What the standard weave is actually for
Road use, and the honest claim that goes with it: this element will not give a standard 939 power you can feel. It replaces a paper panel whose resistance climbs steadily as it fills with one that starts lower and can be returned to that starting point with an air line. Across an ownership that is a steadier engine, not a stronger one. The 937 cc twin held this airbox for three model years, 2016 to 2018, and the intake did not change once in that time.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air, applied to the clean face and worked outwards, handles ordinary servicing. When that is no longer enough, wash the CM61S by hand in warm water with a mild soap, flush it until the water comes away clear, and leave it to dry fully in still air. It must never be dried with heat or over a flame, and it is fitted dry — there is nothing to oil. Downloads carries Sprint Filter's maintenance sheet.
