A washable element does carry a cost, and it is not on the price list: the afternoon between washing one and refitting it. Polyester has to dry right through in moving air and cannot be hurried with heat, so the job wants planning on a motorcycle that is genuinely used — and with its screen, its luggage mounts and a 1,000 cc engine geared for distance, the S 1000 XR is the machine on this list built to be used all week. The PM171S is worth having here — and worth washing on a Saturday.
Key Features
- Polyester woven in a single dry layer, never oiled and never re-oiled after washing
- Filtration at 80 µm, rated flow 5,050 l/m²/sec — the P08 road and track specification
- Thread from ø 22 microns across; the aperture between threads is a different, larger number
- Around double the area of comparable performance media, in the stock frame
- A direct replacement for the paper panel: no airbox work, no remapping
- Reusable for the motorcycle's whole life, covered two years from the date of purchase
Planning the one job it asks for
Most services need no water at all: an air line on the clean face clears the weave and the panel goes straight back in, which is the version you do nine times out of ten. A wash is the exception, called for when grime has gone past what air will shift, and it carries a waiting period. There is no spare in the box either: the whole idea is that there is only ever one element. So the wash belongs to the evening before a rest day, not before a departure. On a machine covering real distance, that scheduling is the whole of the discipline.
What the waiting buys
Nothing on a dynamometer. Nothing that drops into a standard airbox will make this machine feel stronger, and a filter was never the part that decides how a motorcycle pulls. What it buys is a restriction that returns to where it started instead of climbing unannounced between services: the fuelling trims itself against measured airflow and mentions nothing, so a loading paper panel gives no warning. It also buys a number worth knowing: in Sprint Filter's comparison the dry P08 retains 93.13 per cent of 100-micron test particles against 76.42 per cent for four-layer oiled cotton, with no oil in it to reach the sensors downstream.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air is the everyday method: on the clean face of the element, blowing outwards through the cloth. When more is needed, lukewarm water with a mild detergent will do it, rinsed until the water runs clear. Then comes the part that matters most here — a full dry in open air, no heat and no flame at any stage — and only then does the panel go back in, dry and untreated. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the BMW S 1000 XR built from 2020 to 2026, in place of the paper panel with nothing modified. The date matters more here than owners expect: an S 1000 XR from 2015 to 2019 is a different machine for these purposes and takes PM93S, so the year decides and the badge does not. Five machines share the PM171S, and the Fitment tab lists each with its years.
