BMW put the F 800 GS name back on an 895 cc twin and aimed it at riders who genuinely leave the tarmac, and that intention shows up first in the airbox. Loose ground hands an engine air that sealed roads never do: a dry mineral haze that keeps arriving for as long as the track does. The usual upgrade for that duty is oiled cotton gauze. Sprint Filter went the other way with the P08 PM188S — a woven polyester screen used dry, with roughly twice the filtering surface of other performance elements, so the day gets longer before the intake notices.

Where an oiled element ends up
An oiled gauze filters partly with its weave and partly with the film on it, and that film is not fixed in place. Heat, vibration and hours of high flow move it downstream, and the first thing it reaches on a modern twin is the sensor that measures incoming air. Contamination there is not a breakdown, it is a slow bias: the reading drifts low, the fuelling follows, and the rider chases a hesitation that no fault code describes. Dry polyester has nothing to give up: its retention lives in the weave geometry, unchanged after the tenth cleaning, with no dose to judge and nothing to overdo.
What the weave holds back
Sprint Filter's own comparison put the dry P08 at 93.13 per cent retention of a set of 100 micron test particles, against 76.42 per cent for a four-layer oiled cotton element measured the same way. Off the tarmac that is the figure worth reading, because the grit that gets past is the grit that grinds. None of it shows up as horsepower — a drop-in element does not make a standard twin stronger — and the honest claim is an intake restriction that starts low and stays there instead of climbing between services. Where the ground is dusty for days on end, the finer media answer better: the P037 at 37 microns, the P14 at 14, each holding more back and passing less.
Care and cleaning
An air line does most of the work: blow the PM188S through from the clean side outwards so the dust leaves along the path it arrived by. Once a season, or after a wet one, wash it in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinse until the run-off is clear and leave it in moving air until dry all through. Heat and flame are never part of it, and nothing is oiled before it goes back. The maintenance sheet from Sprint Filter is in the Downloads tab.
