Manufacture and Tolerance
Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. Choosing 32 N/mm
On a machine ridden solo and mostly on the road, softer is often the honest choice. A soft rate favours grip and comfort over support: the fork moves early, which keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface. Rates in this range suit lighter riders and machines that spend their time on real roads rather than smooth circuits. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
How a Rear Spring Works
Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering.
Applications
A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same.
Installation
Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes. Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies. Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long.
Road Approval
Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
