How Öhlins Makes Them
Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made. The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate.

Where This Rate Belongs
A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.
Rate and the Linkage
A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters.
Applications
Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. Fitting
Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg. Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil.
Road Approval
Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.
