Why the Rate Holds
Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted. Production is Öhlins' own in Sweden, and the tolerance on the rate is what separates these from a generic replacement. Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get.
Size and Rate
The 57 mm bore and 180 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 110 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.
Choosing 110 N/mm
A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.
What the Rear Spring Decides
Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly.
Applications
Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate. This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do.
Installation
Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate. The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload.
Road Approval
Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.
