Manufacture and Tolerance
Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service. Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against.

What This Rate Does
A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.
How a Rear Spring Works
Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate.
Applications
Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take. Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in.
Installation
The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops. Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload. Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct.
Road Approval
Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.
