Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost. Track use with sustained heavy braking is the typical reason to go this far. Very firm rates keep the chassis attitude stable when the brakes are used at their limit, at the cost of ride comfort. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

What Fitting Involves
Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg. Springs are supplied ready to fit; no cutting, grinding or packing is needed. Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical.
Road Approval
Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.
