The ER-6 was Kawasaki's middleweight for a decade and appeared in riding schools, courier fleets and garages across Europe.
KLEEN
Kawasaki calls it the Clean Air System, and it does what every manufacturer's version does: admits filtered air into the exhaust ports on a closed throttle so leftover mixture finishes burning there. The name is the only thing that distinguishes it and the badge appears on nothing a rider ever sees.
An Inline Four Makes It Loud
Four exhaust pulses collected into one collector produce a sharper report than a twin manages, which is why owners of the larger Kawasakis notice this and owners of the 400s frequently do not.
Soot Inside the Airbox
The signature of a cracked reed, which lets exhaust gas travel back up the hose. It coats the element and the box interior and is almost always found while looking for something else.
A Component Nobody Is Told About
Kawasaki does not mention the Clean Air System at handover and the handbook barely acknowledges it. Most owners learn it exists only when an exhaust change makes its consequences audible on every closed throttle.
A Green Bike Tradition
Kawasaki owners modify more than most, and the aftermarket for the Ninja and Z ranges is correspondingly deep. This part sits at the cheap end of a very long list.
Why Every Modern Four Has One
Emissions cycles measure what leaves the pipe rather than what happens inside the cylinder, so burning the residue afterwards is a legitimate way to pass the test. It costs the manufacturer very little and it costs the rider nothing except a noise nobody asked for.
A Job Best Done Once
Combining this with a filter change, an exhaust fitting or a coolant service means the disassembly is paid for by something else. Doing it in isolation is entirely possible and a slightly wasteful use of an evening that could have covered three jobs.
