DescriptionThe whole story▼
Many Ducati Monster 797s are now with their second or third owner, often bought as a first bigger bike. Whoever takes one home also inherits the previous rider's habits, and the front brake discs, which do most of the work whenever the bike slows, record those habits faithfully. Accossato's DKS053 is a floating front disc listed for the Monster 797 from 2017 to 2022, with a black carrier and a 320 mm friction ring, and the maker describes it as interchangeable with the disc fitted at the factory.
Key Features
- Floating front disc for the Ducati Monster 797, 2017 to 2022
- Takes the place of one of the two original front discs, as Accossato states
- 320 mm outside, 72 mm inside, 5.5 mm thick
- Fixing: five holes of 8.5 mm on a 90 mm circle
- Black carrier; friction ring joined to it by rivets
- Minimum thickness marked on the disc
- Priced per disc; the Monster 797 needs two at the front
- No German ABE on record; for the track
Construction and Material Quality
A floating disc is two parts working as one. The outer ring does the stopping, the black inner carrier bolts to the wheel, and a circle of rivets holds them together while allowing the ring a small amount of free movement. On the DKS053 the carrier locates on a 72 mm centre and is fixed through five 8.5 mm holes on a 90 mm circle; the ring is 320 mm across and 5.5 mm thick. Accossato says it studies the clearance between carrier and ring closely and that the low weight of its discs pays off in the steering.
Reading the Discs on a Used Monster
When you view a used Monster 797, crouch beside the front wheel before the test ride. Run a fingertip from the middle of the friction band out to the edge. A distinct step at the rim shows that the pads have cut a track into the disc over a long distance. Deep circular grooves suggest pads that were run down to metal, or grit that was trapped for a long time. Blue tints point to severe heat. None of this shows in the photographs of an advert, which is why it pays to look in person.
The printed minimum thickness gives the clearest verdict. Measure with a micrometer on the friction surface, not on the ridge at the rim, and compare the reading with the figure on the disc. A disc close to that limit is no reason to walk away from the bike, but it belongs in the price. Accossato recommends new discs after roughly thirty to forty thousand kilometres, sooner if a disc is worn, scored, cracked or below its minimum, and warns that a worn disc can break under extreme load. Budget for two, since the 797 has a disc on each side of the front wheel.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato lists the DKS053 for the Monster 797 in its plus version for 2017 to 2022. For the rear wheel the fixed DK008 is listed from 2017 to 2021. Clean the hub faces so the carriers sit flat, fit new pads with the new discs and tighten the disc bolts to the torque given in Ducati's manual for the Monster 797. A little play at the rivets is part of the floating design and nothing to worry about.
Road Approval
The DKS053 has no German ABE on file and no type approval, so we sell it for track and competition riding.
Scope of Delivery
